I personally play the original game, and was very impressed by it. I will admit, however, that they have a nack for scaring the crap out of you. Anyway, I first heard about this game while reading an issue of a gaming magazine. I thought "hey, it looks good, i might like the game." Well time went by, and I heard more and more good things about the game. I went to the store, took a look at it, and decided why not buy it? I'll be honest, I'm more than glad I spent $40 on Resident Evil 4. This game re-defines the series in my opinion, and can be an exciting game for anyone willing to try it.

Incase some of you don't know, Capcom in addition to making the Resident Evil series as well as many other games also produced all 4 Devil May Cry games. If you enjoyed any one of those, but have played Resident Evil, I can guarantee you'll like RE4. I say this only because I myself am a very avid Devil May Cry player and resident evil too, and I saw alot of that series in this installment of the RE series. Mainly in the puzzle solving, sometimes corny but fun cutscenes that don't drag on too long, the nonstop action in boss fights, and most of all, the creativity involved in each and every fight. RE4 gives you full control over what you do in battle, and the variety of options you have make it even better.

Graphics 10/10

In my opinion, this is game has some of the best PS2 graphics I've seen. I'm ranking it up there with God of War, Shadow of the Colossus, Final Fantasy X, you get the idea. The detail is most impressive, mainly on Leon (main character) as well as all the monsters and environments. Each and every crevice was drawn out and designed to blend perfectly with the scenery. Nothing looks out of place, and playing this game on a plasma/LCD television makes it even better. Theres plenty of blood, but its not overdone whatsoever. The cutscenes are slightly sharper in detail than the gameplay, but not so much as to make normal gameplay look like crap in comparison.

Sound 10/10

I've got no complaints at all in this department. The sound is crisp and LOUD. You can hear the monsters coming even when they're not on screen. Its loud enough so you're aware of their presence, but deceiving in terms of its location. All that meaning it helps you to find the enemy's general whereabout, but leaves you guessing which adds to overall feeling of horror and suspense. Everything from gunshots to face mangling kicks from Leon sound clear and realistic. The music is eerie, but fitting for each area. One thing I compliment Capcom on is having the music play while monsters are still present within your general area. Although some people would complain that it makes the game too easy, I think most gamers would agree knowing whether or not you're done makes the game less frustrating. Although you know their still present, you still dont know exactly where they are :O!

Gameplay 10/10

The gameplay in RE4 truly defines it as an instant classic to look back on and say "wow, that game totally kicked A**!" Its a cross between first and third person shooting. You have an over the shoulder look behind Leon and when you aim, it zooms in slightly as if you were holding the gun in front of your eye to aim it yourself. The monsters, although frighteningly slow and undead-like can and will get in your face...literally. I'm talking freakishly real encounters here. It doesnt feel like they're after Leon, it feels like they're after you. They kick, bite, throw, maybe even spit (although I've yet to see it :P) and they're fast. Similar to the God of War "mini-game" kills, when you shoot an opponent in the leg, or slash them with your knife and knock them down to their knees, if you're close enough, you're given a special option. You can drop kick them right in the face! This can have one of two effects: the victim flying through the air and landing flat on his a**, or, his head flying off of his torso accompanied by the appropriate crackle splat noise. When a monster grabs you, its not the end of the game...yet...maybe...well you simply do what you're prompted to do, which is likely to wiggle the left analog stick and shake free or stab him/her. In addition to fully interactive fighting, the environment is also at your disposal to some extent. There are boxes and barrels that can be broken throughout the game, either with a weapon or your knife. They typically contain money (yes, money), ammo, a healing item of some sort, a key item, or a treasure (yes, treasure!). You can dive through windows, kick down doors, and you can even kick down ladders you just climbed to keep the enemy at bay. The best part of the gameplay are the interactive CUTSCENES. Yep, thats right. Every play Metal Gear Solid 3? If not, let me fill you in. In the majority of the cutscenes, you could press whichever button flashed on the screen for a certain effect. The outcome varied from seeing a ghost with a message to checking out the sexy femail spy. In RE4, you have the option (its more of a necessity) to press certain combinations of buttons when prompted to. You'll die if you dont, I can guarantee it. They'll be to dodge, duck, run, swim, whatever, but in CUTSCENES! This forces you to pay attention as well as gives you a greater sense of involvement in the plot. Lastly, I'm sure you're wondering about the money and treasure I mentioned finding earlier in the review. Shortly after starting the game, you run across a shady guy with an odd accent and glowing red eyes. His whereabouts are marked on the map, but you'll immediately know its him by the bright blue torches he surrounds his encampments with. You'll also feel at ease when you see him, because it almost always means a typewriter (save point), new weapons of course, and a monster free zone (or at least almost monster free). Other than that, there are no explanations here, just a dude with LOTS of guns. You use the money you find to purchase bigger atache cases (inventory), guns, add-ons for certain guns such as a scope for the rifle, and tune ups for your guns. By tuneups I mean the option is available to increase firing power, bullet capacity per round, reload time in seconds, and firing speed. Over time, more and more tune-up options are available to you as well as guns. The vast majority of your weapons come from the vendor, except for your default handgun and the first shotgun you acquire. He'll also buy your ammo/herbs/items, although he himself sells no ammo. Treasures you find that arent key items are typically your largest source of income through selling them to the vendor. The combine option you're given allows you not only to combine herbs into powerful medicines, but combine your weapon parts (scope + rifle) and certain treasures to increase their worth. For example, if you find a lamp and when examined it says it has three indentations where something could fit, see what treasures you find and try to combine them. Sometimes, they will in fact combine, and sell for more as a unified item then they would individually.
